3 Moving Tips To Help You Pack Like A Pro

Moving. It’s one of those things that no one likes to do. Want your move to go smoothly? We’ve got 3 moving tips that will turn you into a packing pro!

Purge Before You Pack

This is hands down the top moving tip we’ve come across and put into practice ourselves. Depending on how long you’ve lived at your current residence, chances are you’ve accumulated stuff that you no longer use or need.

Go through your house room by room and begin to purge everything that you no longer have a use for. We recommend that you separate it into two piles, one for the trash and one to donate or sell. If you’re having second thoughts about parting with a specific item, set it aside and give yourself a designated timeframe to make a decision.

Make A Packing Plan

This step is key to making the unpacking phase go smoothly. Once you’ve found your new home make sure to take note of the closet, cupboard and storage space in the house. If possible, take pictures during a walkthrough so that you can use this as your jumping off point for your packing plan.

Once you’ve made a list of all available storage, it’s time to get started. First, envision yourself living in your new space as you begin to mentally organize the rooms of your home. Get as detailed as you can. Next, make a list of each storage asset in the room and begin to list what you’ll keep where. If you are a visual person you can even sketch the spaces out on paper and label where necessary. Lastly, as you start packing, do your best to group everything together by room and storage asset.

Let’s Get Labelling

The basic premise here is to label boxes with as much detail as possible. Most people will label the box based on the room that it belongs in, but we recommend getting more granular. For example, if you have a box that is meant for the kitchen pantry, you would label the box ‘Kitchen: pantry’. You can even add in more detail and include a listing of what items are in the box.

This will not only help you to throughout the unpacking process, it will also give you the ability to delegate if you have friends and family helping you unpack.

Bonus tip: create a colour coding system for each room in your house. Execute this by hanging a colour coded sign outside of each room and then label your boxes and furniture with a corresponding colour tag so that everything ends up in the room it’s meant to be in.
