Home organization tips

| Seasonal Tips

With the arrival of spring often comes the urge to purge and organize. Admittedly, life this spring looks a little different for all of us amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of dwelling on what we can’t control, we’re shifting our attention to what we can. And, what better use of our time spent indoors than to tackle home organization projects. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite home organization resources to help you make the most of your home organization endeavours.

Pretty Pantries

Whether you have an expansive walk-in pantry or dedicated cupboard space, we can all agree that home organization is even more satisfying when it is aesthetically pleasing as well. Although, in an era of uncertainty we’re all being budget-conscious so expensive custom containers aren’t necessary. We highly recommend using plain ol’ mason jars or containers to store dry goods. Looking for a unique way to hold snacks? Baskets are the perfect catch-all for loose packages. Plus, they look great too so that’s a big win in our books.

Tip: You can often find reasonably priced jars, baskets and clear containers at local stores like Canadian Tire and Dollarama, or online from Amazon.

Closet Clean Out

Heading into a new season is the perfect time to go through the closets in your home. Kick-off your closet organization by removing any clothing that is damaged (you know that sweater with holes that you just can’t part with). Now removing these items doesn’t mean that they need to go in the trash. Simply put them aside to be fixed later. Next, purge anything that no longer fits or hasn’t been worn for as long as you can remember. Now that you’re down to the items that you’re keeping, it’s time to organize.

Each person will have their own unique system, however, we’ll share what works for us. For tops, we opt to organize by sleeve length or style. To give you an example, you could organize by tank tops/camis, t-shirts, long sleeves, sweaters, cardigans, etc. Once we’ve streamlined the closet by style, we find it helpful to organize each style by colour, from light to dark. This is so helpful when you are looking to replace clothing – you can easily see what you have too much or too little of. This technique isn’t just limited to hanging items either. You can easily replicate the same pattern in your drawers or cupboards.

Tip: If you have trouble parting with items, turn the hangers the opposite way and after 6 months, donate anything that remains that way.

Beautiful Bathrooms

Over time, the cabinets underneath the sink can become quite unsightly. This season is the perfect time to refresh and reorganize. The best way to start your bathroom organization project is to toss old products. A lot of personal care items have an expiry date so purging them every 6 months or so is a good habit to get in to. When you’ve pared down your products, it’s time to get started. We love using small plastic drawers to organize smaller toiletries, skincare and makeup. They are inexpensive, hold everything together and make them easily accessible for everyday use. Another great storage tip is to use a tension rod or two to create extra real estate under your sink. You can use staggered rods to hold light baskets or even hang cleaning products and towels off them. If you use a little ingenuity, you can turn your bathroom cupboards from wasted space to spacious in no time.

Tip: Investing in a hot tool caddy is a great way to keep your counters clear. You can use and store your styling tools without waiting for them to cool.
