Get Prepped For Spring With These Seasonal Home Maintenance Tips
After a long, cold and dreary winter, we’re all gearing up to get spring underway. Make the most of this transition and breathe some colourful life into your home with these 3 seasonal home maintenance tricks.
Spring Cleaning Session
Spring cleaning is by far the most gratifying experience. Plus, a clean home is a perfect canvas for seasonal decor. After being cooped up in your house all winter, it’s no secret that things can get pretty dusty and stuffy. Now is the perfect opportunity to begin putting away all your heavy winter blankets, coats and clothes and bring out lighter, more airy fabrics.
Inside, we recommend doing a full top to bottom clean to get those areas that are often missed. Attach a soft brush head to your vacuum and go around the edges of the ceilings to get rid of dust and cobwebs. Give your baseboards a good once-over with the vacuum followed by a damp cloth and some mild detergent. You’ll also want to wipe down all your windows, casings and all hard surfaces that collect dust.
Bonus points: As you’re working your way through your house be sure to purge the items you no longer need.
From The Outside In
Winter has a way of leaving your home looking tattered and tired. As the warmer weather sets in, it’s the perfect opportunity to freshen up your outdoor space to get prepared for the months ahead.
If you haven’t done so already, now is the perfect time to take down your Christmas lights. Check your outdoor lighting and change the bulbs in your outdoor sconces if they’re out. Now is also a perfect chance to pick up any trash that may have been hiding in the snowbanks and sweep up remnants of salt from your porch and walkway.
It may be too early to get planting, but you can bring out your patio furniture and treat yourself to a new entry mat to brighten up your porch.
Freshen It Up With Foliage
The quickest way to bring spring to life within your home is with a vase of fresh-cut flowers. By February, most grocery stores start carrying inexpensive bundles of fresh-cut flowers and nothing quite says spring like fresh tulips.
If you aren’t into fresh flowers (allergies or a number of other factors), faux flowers will do the trick as well. We recommend a trip to your local Pier 1 or Michaels to pick up a few colourful stems – their florals look more realistic and no one will know the difference.
